Well, when I noticed that my internship would be connected with 3D food printing I didn't know what to expect but most of all I was curious and couldn't wait to finally see the "magic machine".
During my 3 months internship at Natural Machines I've been overwhelmed with so many questions from my friends, like: "How can you print the chicken?" or "Really? A dinosaur made of spinach, but how?" And I enjoyed seeing them wondering, wanting to know more about it. Hopefully very soon, we will be able to have 3D printers in our kitchens, preparing food in extraordinary ways.
I had a chance to discover the world of 3D printing, create new recipes, especially centered around the sports nutrition area. As a track and field athlete this was just perfect for me. You can see some of them in the pictures below.
I see the advantage of the 3D printer especially for people who consume lots of processed foods. They could, for example, instead of buying a muesli bar in a shop, prepare it by themselves. Fresh, customized and most importantly without preservatives. And how long does it take to prepare a bar? Well, it depends on the shape, but usually no more than 5 min.
Besides discovering the world of 3D food printing, I've also had the privilege to participate in different events. For me, one of the most interesting was the 1st Sports Nutrition Conference at Camp Nou. The title of the conference was "Recovery in football", held by Barca Innovation Hub and Gatorade Sport Science Institute.
A lot was discussed about the right amount of protein ingestion and maximizing protein synthesis after exercise. As I had been working to prepare some 3D printed gelatine-beetroot balls, hearing more about the positive outcomes of treating injuries with gelatine was more than just interesting. In the second part of the conference we were informed about all the challenges that a nutritionist has when it comes to travelling.
It's also been great to participate at the conference "Fostering synergies between Food and Health", hosted by EIT Food CLC South and EIT Health Spain. The event focused on co-creating new strategies to help citizens and patients be in control of their food intake by learning about food composition, incorporating new healthy habits in their daily life and learning how to keep a healthy microbiome.
Now I think everyone can answer the question from the title: YES, POR SUPUESTO! :D
That's a short brief about my professional experience in BCN. Very soon, coming up my last post regarding on internship and I will tell you more how did I spend my free time in the city ;) Stay tuned.
